Ergonomics and Your Spine

November 25, 2007 · 1 Comment

When seated in front of a computer for long hours of the day, it is hard to remember to keep the proper posture without practice. Ergonomics can help your body health, relieve back pain and help your all over productivity in the office workplace. Any company with an eye to the future and the knowledge that computers and technology are taking over our business environment, these companies would know to invest in the “accessories” and training that go along with such technology.

In order to use anything properly and produce the desired results, training is required. Same applies to your office furniture, including your desk, computer, office chair, office seating and of course keyboard. All things on your desk should be adjusted to be used ergonomically and wisely to get the most satisfying and productive work experience. Most importantly when working in front of a computer for long hours is your office chair.

Your office chair is critical to your comfort and being able to position the rest of your workspace properly is dependent upon your chair being adjustable to your body type. Not every chair fits every person and each user should take into consideration many different factors when picking his or her office chair. Each task at hand also presents another type of need when it comes to styles and mechanisms on an office chair.

A doctor has different needs when it comes to seating than does the standard computer analyst. Although each type of profession, whether doctor or analyst, requires an ergonomic chair, the type of construction of that chair and the mechanisms required for the tasks at hand would differ. A doctor would find a stool with an adjustable height level of more than average to compensate for the differing heights of tables. The same doctor would also find an armless office chair easier to use for range of motion when diagnosing patients. However, a computer technician spending long hours at the desk would require a model of office chair with arms and more ergonomic mechanisms such as lumbar support and knee tilt adjustment to help the body compensate for the long hours spent seated.

When picking your office chair, consider ergonomics and positioning as the key elements instead of being drawn in by a certain “Style” or “name brand” high end model chair that turns out to not work for your particular needs. When shopping for an office chair, keep in mind or make a list of the most important things in your office chair and the things that you desire and this should help you to pick the right office chair for your situation and ergonomics.

Ergonomics & Workers Compensation Claims

November 24, 2007 · Leave a Comment

The amount of workers compensation claims stemming from improper ergonomics in the workplace is staggering. With employees spending more and more time in front of the computer and with the long hours worked in some professions, it is now wonder that RSI’s have increased.

Repetitive stress injuries or RSI’s are now commonplace terms in the H.R. departments in most large corporations. These human resource employees are stuck filling out countless forms and paperwork for each of these employees claims, not to mention the countless amounts of money poured in from the “would be profits” of the company to pay these claims.

Prevention can be the key to paying less when it comes to workers compensation claims. NO company is free from fear of these types of injuries and we are not even talking about just our average office employees anymore. Hairstylists, cooks, massage therapists and such are also prime targets for Repetitive stress injuries because of the repetitive motion required by their everyday tasks at the office.

Spending the money to adjust your office environment by ordering new office chairs, office furniture and investing in employee training in the use of proper ergonomics and positioning is key to eliminating these workers compensation claims. This can eliminate the need for loss of employee time and money spent on huge insurance premiums when it to claims made because of improper ergonomics.

Ergonomic Office Chairs Can Help Relieve Work Tension

November 16, 2007 · 1 Comment

When sitting in an office chair for long hours, it is no wonder when returning home from work, your body would feel the tension and pressures from the day. Ergonomic office chairs and learning how to sit ergonomically and position your body correctly can be a terrific solution to tension. Workplace productivity in any company is a worry for the upper management and people held responsible when the work doesn’t get done.

Sitting correctly and learning to position you body, relieves tension and can help employees to not only work better but harder. Studies done recently have shown how much more productive an office can become as a result of a “facelift” in the ergonomic department. The employees receive new equipment and learn how to position it and use it properly for the tasks at hand and have recorded how different they feel at the end of the work day and how much more they seem to have gotten done when comfortable in their work environment.

Workplace communication is important when it comes to ergonomics and training all workplace employees how to sit and work properly. The amounts of workers compensation claims stemming from RSI’s (repetitive stress injuries) has skyrocketed recently as the number of hours worked has risen and more and more employers are dependent upon their employees sitting in front of a computer. The amounts of money in insurance premiums and paying such claims is one that can be avoided for most business if proper ergonomics were installed into the building.

Many businesses are jumping on the bandwagon and realizing that not only can money be saved in claims from practicing ergonomics in the office, but ergonomics also help to increase productivity and keep your employees at work, instead of at home on leave for “carpal tunnel” surgery or some other common ergonomic mishap. Save money for your company and find a great way to make your employees more productive by using ergonomics in your office and reap the benefits.

Good Ergonomics and Office Chairs, It is up to the Person Not the Chair to make Ergonomics Work

November 15, 2007 · 1 Comment

Today as I sat down at my desk to start answering the daily inbox, it was pretty early. My Herman Miller Office Chair felt wonderful. I realized that even though I had spent an outrageous amount of money for this ergonomic office chair, it was well worth it. I can spend upwards of 8-10 hours a day in front of the computer just trying to get it all done. Although, this is not 8 hours in a row, I always take breaks. Mostly these breaks involve helping my sidekick and darling little three year old whose needs seem to be of the utmost importance to her, and this helps me remember to keep moving. Movement, one of the keys to good ergonomics…..

Motion when seated is key to body health and although an expensive ergonomic chair can help, it is not necessary. Ergonomics involves the practice of good body positioning in the task at hand and it is up to the person in order to make sure that ergonomics are practiced and the proper position is kept.

Just like an expensive piece of exercise equipment, when used correctly, you can target all the right areas in your body. But, when used improperly or “un-ergonomically” the same piece of aerobic equipment has completely different results. Your office chair, can result in injury over time if used incorrectly in the same manner that exercising when positioned wrong can result in injury.

Or you could just do situps and produce the same results as those expensive machines as long as you position your body right, it is ALL about the ergonomics and body positioning. Same thing applies with ergonomics. Even a cheap office chair, when used correctly and positioned properly in the beginning, can work well ergonomically and give the user comfort as well as prevent injury.

Making sure to remember how to sit correctly is just as important as choosing the right chair for your body type and for the task at hand. I love my chair and due to my need for the arm adjustment mechanism (I have carpal tunnel) and need for certain lumbar support, also good for RSI (repetitive stress injuries) injuries and the 2-1 synchro tilt, it is the perfect chair for me and might I add, comfortable as hell. Take your time when looking for your office chair and make sure that the chair you decide on has all of the things that are on your wish list and then learn how to SIT ERGONOMICALLY.

The Swopper stool, made by Via is currently in a class all of it’s own. With it’s truly unique ergonomic design concepts and style of sitting, the VIA has won over it’s many critics once they have spent time testing the design. When first viewed by someone unaware of it’s ergonomic presence, it may seem just a high-end and stylish stool with great presence. It is very modern with the coordinating coils giving just a hint as to the true inner workings of the Swopper motion seating experience.

Once seated in the Swopper stool, your spine can definitely feel the relaxed and yet stretched perfectly position of the spine and lower lumbar region. The lower lumbar can feel truly relaxed and although the seated position of the Swopper may look hard to keep, once seated, the user realizes how easy it is to stay in the position without effort. The design of the Swopper keeps your feet flat on the floor and your back in the correct position, even without any backrest at all.

The standard Swopper featured in the VIA Quick Ship Program has an ultrasuede fabric which is helpful for its gripping qualities to hold the user in place. The Swopper is also available in a large variety of custom ordered fabrics including leather and many different patterns available.

The VIA custom ordered Swopper Stool has a choice of two different base choices, titanium or anthracite (charcoal gray). Either base is available through the custom ordered Swopper program although the quick ship program is only sold with the anthracite base. A wooden backrest is even available as an option for custom ordered Swopper’s.

With strong support from it’s purchaser’s and ranking high in customer satisfaction while winning many prestigious office furniture design awards, the Swopper Chair is here to stay. This author would rank it as one of my most unique seating experiences with real comfort ability for long periods. Using one for a week to “test drive” it, I could feel some pressure released from my spine and got a ton of compliments and questions from everyone who saw it. It truly wins many hearts with it’s beautiful, unique and ergonomic styled design and health benefits.
